The Durrës amphitheatre is included on the tentative list of Albania for inscribing it as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is the largest amphitheatre ever built in the Balkan Peninsula with once having a capacity of 20,000 people. It was discovered in the late 1966 and has become a popular tourist attraction in the city as well as in the country. The city of Durres was founded in the 7th century BC under the name Epidamnos.
